Famed Erasmus High School, Pair of Terracotta Heads
The original Erasmus Academy was one of the first secondary schools in the United States, founded in 1787. Exploding population in Brooklyn made for a large expansion to the facility, from which these keystones originate. Set against a simple concave background, the heads depict a turn of the century boy and girl student, each with a pleasant expression. The girl´s hairstyle is particularly of the moment, quite in the art nouveau fashion with headband. Erasmus High alumni consists of a near whos who of 20th centruy entertainment, including barbra streisand, Betty Comden, Clive Davis, Al Davis,Neil Diamond, Bobby Fischer, John Forsythe, Elaine de Kooning, Arthur Frommer, Sam LeFrak, Beverly Sills, Mickey Spillane, Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Tisch amongst others. The school undwent renovations in the 1990´s, when the current example were removed. Identical pieces are still intqact today and on display.
